Winning project of Cantica21, Dante section. Initiative of MAECI, MIC, DGCC
The first part of the project The Hidden Doctrine was an in-depth analysis of Rene Guenon’s text “The Esotericism of Dante” and specifically the numerical esoteri-cism, on which I decided to structure my work, thanks also to a constant exchange with art critic Sabina Ghinassi, an expert on Dante.
Guenon believed that the Divine Comedy is pervaded insistently by six numbers (“3, 7, 9, 22, 515, 666”), so I came up with the idea of a photographic polyptych composed of twenty-two images (one of the six numbers) mounted following a harmonic, specular figure. The images are made in four ways that usually appear in my artistic practices: photographs made ad hoc, digital processing of existing images, manual coloring, and transformation of photographs into drawings.
For each issue I created two to ten images, seeking both aesthetic and conceptual coherence.
